Telecom Cloud Platform and Management

OVERVIEW

With the diversification of telecom services and demands of higher bandwidth usage, worldwide leading telecommunications operators execute corresponding network transformation initiatives by leveraging virtualization, container, cloud native, and software technologies, which also became a critical step for their business transformation journey. As for Chunghwa Telecom, Cloud Computing Laboratory has been building a platform toward convergence of networking and cloud computing, which runs workloads such as virtualized network functions (VNFs), cloud native network functions (CNFs) and vertical applications. The key technologies of the telco cloud platform include Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and various micro-services of automated management and collaboration systems. This platform enables operators to deploy new telecommunications services on demand and agilely. The agility improves the construction and maintenance efficiency of the cloud-native telecommunications network and delivers innovative services to customers.

APPLICATION STATUS

The telecom cloud platforms obtained over 40 patents in Taiwan and won one gold, one silver and one bronze medals in total during the last 3 years in Taiwan Innotech Expo.
Network function virtualization and hardware/software disaggregation:As many telecommunications network functions towards virtualization or containerization, Chunghwa Telecom Labs has been developing a telecom cloud platform and management technology to support multiple telecom services spanning from the network edge to the core, including 5G core network, voice, routing switching, CDN, vUPF, vRAN and various edge applications.
VNF/CNF Onboarding and Life Cycle Management: By developing OASIS standard language TOSCA in NFV, users of the telecom cloud team can define network function workflows and policies to deploy network functions and applications on their own. The telecommunication operators effectively deliver innovative applications to customers and facilitates robust of services, which further contributes to reducing CAPEX and OPEX costs.
VNF/CNF Performance Acceleration: Chunghwa Telecom Labs integrates VNF and CNF acceleration technologies for various telecom services to meet performance requirements because it is a critical measurement metric of telecom network cloudification. The acceleration technologies include computing, storage, and networking. The corresponding acceleration resource management and allocation modules have been developing.
Edge computing for 5G private network : Chunghwa Telecom Labs has been dedicated to building a private 5G network enterprise cloud platform integrating IT and CT, which provides the edge computing ability to run workloads including networking services and vertical applications. In this way, enterprise clients can deploy and manage their vertical applications on this edge cloud platform to not only meet the 5G requirements, e.g., high network throughput and low latency, but also secure sensitive data.
