SATELLITE COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

Overview

With the rapid development of satellite communication technology, the cost of manufacturing and launching satellites declines continuously. In particular, the recent boom in Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communication technology makes international manufacturers rush to the market for satellite network services. LEO satellite communication can be utilized to complement the existing public telecommunication network. It can provide broadband Internet access and voice services in mountains, sea, sky, islands and remote rural areas to reduce digital divide and achieve digital equality. Considering the spectrum used by satellites and the 5G system, we develop technologies for the harmonious coexistence across different systems, including 5G and Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO), 5G and LEO, GEO and LEO, etc. We also evaluate the availability and reliability of Satellite Service in Taiwan and conduct research on the development of 3GPP Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN).

Coexistence Architecture of 5G and Satellite Systems

Application Status

5G and GEO coexistence technology:5G and GEO coexistence technology in C-Band is the basis for ensuring the continuous operation of ST-2 satellite. Using 5G commercial equipment to conduct actual measurement and analysis, we propose 5G and ST-2 satellite interference protection mechanism for the rights of existing ST-2 satellite users and the public benefits brought by 5G services.
5G and LEO coexistence technology:For the launch of LEO commercial service in Taiwan, we have developed an interference analysis model to evaluate the interference coexistence between 5G and LEO. With the premise of maintaining the rights of existing 5G users, we select the most suitable location for LEO gateway earth station construction in our country.
Evaluation of LEO service availability and reliability:LEO technology is booming. In order to master the latest technology and business opportunities of LEO, we study the important parameters of LEO systems, the in-orbit operation data, and the dynamic position of the satellite. By analyzing the above-mentioned data, we provide the latest LEO service availability and reliability analysis to our country. This achievement can be used by regulator and the companies of related industrial chains to master the latest global coverage of LEO.
Research on 3GPP NTN standard:3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) standards organization develops NTN standard specifications and provides wide-area network services by combining NTN with 5G mobile network. Currently, the technical standards for NTN access of terminal equipment and base station service are being discussed and formulated. We focus on the integration of the NTN and mobile network, which could realize the ubiquitous coverage.
