Network Virtualization and Software-Defined Network

Overview

There are various proprietary hardware devices in the traditional telecom central offices. To deploying these monolithic systems are time-consuming, difficult to maintain, and high energy consumption. And thus it is hard for operators to provide on-demand services and to achieve Net Zero Emission.

Comparing to proprietary hardware devices, operators need to build their networks with more flexibility to face the digitalization trends. TL investigates the network virtualization techniques for telecom network, including the Network Function Virtualization (NFV) in application layer and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) in transport layer. According to the customer requirements, the NFV enables the operators to build network services and security functions by means of virtualized software which are decoupled from hardware for network equipment, and therefore avoids vendor lock-in.

TL deliberates on NFV on various network gears. Firstly, the vIMS (virtual IP Multimedia Subsystem) technology that features the cloud-network synergy and self-developed network service functions. Secondly, the decoupling and virtualization of fiber-to-the-home devices realize the separation of control plane and data plane. Thirdly, the SDN controller provides enterprise with information security and traffic management. Finally, the quality measurement functions that can be deployed on-demand to locations in, e.g., network infrastructure and cloud environments. By taking advantage of network virtualization and SDN technology, the faster, more stable, more flexible and better quality network services can be provided.

Application Status

The telco VNFs and open API techniques under vIMS platform: The open and commercial virtual IMS(vIMS) experimentation platforms are built with self-developed telco VNFs(such as SBC; Session Border Controller) contained inside. In addition, by utilizing the micro service and container technologies, the “Telephone Access Service” can be provided through open APIs on the CHT IoT platform.
The hardware and software providers are invited to complete the integration of both open network infrastructure and traditional network infrastructure. Besides the demonstration for the Internet and MOD services, a field trial in production network is planned in the near future. The vision is to break through the tightly-coupled of software and hardware in traditional devices, and make the access network evolving toward the cloud and open infrastructure.
The SDN controller technology for enterprise information security and traffic management: Developing SDN intelligent network management technology, which provides real-time network topology and path calculation, reduces the network security risks for enterprises, and solves the difficulties for network management.
The quality measurement technology for cloud and network environments:Developing the quality measurement technology and software for cloud and network environments, which can be deployed in telco cloud, public cloud or integrated in network devices and service terminals, to provide quality monitoring for end-to-end or specified section.
