FMC SERVICE AND RESOURCE ORCHESTRATION

Overview

According to the Hype Cycle for CSP Operations report published in 2021 by Gartner, the foundation of telecom operations management in the era of 5G/6G fixed-mobile convergence includes the development of service and resource orchestration, re-architecture of existing operations support systems to support end-to-end automation, and fulfill dynamic and complex network environments. Moreover, telecom operators establish seamless operation processes across operators through Open APIs and promote network capabilities exposure to build an open and interconnected ecosystem.

Referring to international standards and advanced management frameworks, we are committed to the research and development of zero-touch automation to realize centralized management and control for fixed and mobile networks and support the business expansion of Consumer Business Group, Enterprise Business Group, and International Business Group in Chunghwa Telecom.

FMC SERVICE AND RESOURCE ORCHESTRATION

Application Status

End-to-End Service Orchestrator in 5G Networks:We developed a 5G end-to-end service orchestrator for the fixed-mobile convergence network. The orchestrator adopts TM Forum industry-standard Open APIs, which integrates cross-domain control units in the fixed/mobile networks, automatically deploys the 5G base stations configuration and activates the 5G services. Taiwan 5G services were launched in 2020 when our service orchestrator supported 5G C-RAN (Centralized-RAN) and D-RAN (Distributed-RAN) deployments. Hundreds of thousands of 5G crosshaul circuits were automatically deployed, significantly improving the efficiency of 5G base station construction, and expanding the penetration of 5G services in Taiwan. As an industry leader in 2023, we launched 5G network slicing in areas such as Taoyuan Saint Paul's Hospital and Kaohsiung Asia New Bay Area to develop vertical applications such as smart medical care and smart transportation. Six patents have been published for the development of this technology.
Management and Orchestration for Fixed-Mobile Convergence Transport Network:We developed a WAN SDN controller for managing the fixed-mobile convergence transport network, comparable to the software solutions of Cisco, Nokia, Juniper, and other international vendors. Our WAN SDN controller provides next-generation intelligent management capabilities, such as near real-time traffic collection via telemetry monitoring techniques and routing analysis by BGP-LS/SR policy protocols. The controller can perform dynamic path selection based on the customer’s SLA (Service Level Agreement) requirements, such as guaranteed bandwidth and latency. The controller can also support future 5G network slicing applications. In 2023, the SDN controller completed production deployment and managed thousands of MSERs (Multi-Service Edge Routers). Three patents have been published for the development of this technology.
Management and Orchestration for Virtual/Cloud-native Network Functions in Telco Cloud:We developed the management and orchestration functionalities of VNF (Virtual Network Function)/CNF (Cloud-native network function) for telecom services. It can automatically and dynamically create, configure, activate, and monitor different kinds of VNFs and realize the ability to deploy VNFs across data centers. Compared with the traditional PNF (Physical Network Function), VNF significantly shortens the deployment time from 7 days to 20 minutes. It has been widely used in our HiNet public Wi-Fi and CDN for OTT TV services. Three patents have been published for the research and development of this technology.
