HYBRID AND OPEN NETWORK MANAGEMENT

Overview

Traditional large network equipment providers monopolized the telecom network equipment market, resulting in a "vendor lock-in" situation. In 2020, Rakuten Mobile was the first to use Open RAN to build the networks. Network components are interconnected through open and unified interfaces and run on commodity hardware, allowing operators to use network components from different vendors to meet different needs instead of bundling a package from a single network equipment vendor as in the past, which greatly reducing construction costs and improving deployment flexibility.

Chunghwa Telecom joins the O-RAN Alliance, actively adopts open architecture network technology, executes the National Development Council's "Asian Silicon Valley 5G Open Network Integration Verification and Promotion Plan", and builds 5G open networks based on international standards. The test environment provides equipment verification and testing services to domestic network equipment manufacturers, integrates multiple sets of 5G O-RAN E2E high-reliability solutions, and drives the development of the domestic 5G ecosystem.

This plan focuses on developing 5G open architecture network integrated management technology, working with domestic and international network equipment vendors to create a one-stop E2E management and control solution, and building an open, cost-effective enterprise private network turnkey solution.

Application Status

Integrated Network Management and Control Technology for 5G Open Architecture: Integrating network management, device management, and security management, providing a one-stop cross-domain management and control solution to monitor 5G private networks. It consolidates the management of multiple access networks (e.g., wired, Wi-Fi, 5G) and enterprise terminals while providing dedicated network cybersecurity detection and protection. With the capability to integrate and manage multi-brand solutions for RAN, MEC (Multi-Access Edge Computing), and 5G core networks, we are working with domestic manufacturers to build the 5G ecosystem. It has been deployed in several domestic and international landmark 5G network projects while expanding overseas opportunities in Southeast Asia, Europe, and elsewhere. Research and development achievements have resulted in the publication of six patents.
O-RAN Base Station Management and Control Technology:Following the O-RAN management standards defined by the O-RAN Alliance, we develop an O-RAN base station management system on our own and fulfill the O-RAN SMO (Service Management Orchestration) framework, which implements eight categories of 21 standard management interfaces (O1 Management Interface) and Streaming Telemetry monitoring technology. Meanwhile, we provide an interoperability verification tool for O-RAN management interfaces to integrate multi-vendor O-RAN network equipment quickly. From 2022 to 2024, through the National Development Council's "Asia Silicon Valley 5G Open Network Integration Verification and Promotion Plan", we have completed integration with O-RAN base stations from nine domestic manufacturers, which will be widely used in enterprise private network management in the future. A total of 4 patents have been published for R&D results.
